Using Ttf Fonts From Latex

This is a more concrete variation of http://www.arcetri.astro.it/CC/guides/truetype/index.html specialized for debian etch.

Create temporary working directory and go there
Copy the candidate TTF files here
Rename the files according to ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/info/fontname/fontname.pdf.
- The font creator (first letter) is looked up in /usr/share/texmf-tetex/fonts/map/fontname/supplier.map
- The font family (next two letters) is lookup in /usr/share/texmf-tetex/fonts/map/fontname/typeface.map
- Therer are lots of variants (next few letters). The normal variants we see are: regular (r), bold (b), italic (ri) and bold italic (bi).
- Last is the encoding of the font which is probably Adobe standard encoding (8a)
Set the shell variable $namebase to the first three letters of the new fontname (creator and family)
Set the shell variables $supplier and $fontname to the lowercase complete (not single-letter) supplier/fontname of the font.
Now run ttf2pt1 on all fonts. This command saves the mapping of LaTeX name to PostScript name in fontnames.txt:

Next step is to run fontinst.sty on the files:

Now we run all these fonts trough pltotf and vptovf and clean up:

 # for a in *.vpl; do vptovf $a; done
 # rm *.pl *.vpl *.mtx

Now to the installation. I manage all these fonts using stow.
We move everything over:

       sudo mv *.$a $texmf/fonts/$ext/$supplier/$fontname; \

   sudo mkdir -p $texmf/fonts/type1/$supplier/$fontname; \
   sudo mv *.pfb $texmf/fonts/type1/$supplier/$fontname; \
   sudo mkdir -p $texmf/tex/latex/psnfss; \
   sudo mv *.fd $texmf/tex/latex/psnfss

After this, only fontinst.log and fontnames.txt should be left in the current directory.
We now must create the map file for this font family:

We add a new map file to update-updmap. Then we update all the tex indices

   sudo updmap-sys

Now you may want to add additional style files which provide canned \selectfont calls to make use of the font. Place those in $texmf/tex/latex/font-$supplier-$fontname/. Example:
